Airline defends bright lipstick ban

Turkish Airlines has defended its recent move to ban flight attendants from wearing brightly colored lipstick and nail polish, such as pink or red.

A statement from the airline to CNN Travel said colors such as red and dark pink are unsuitable as they “impaired the visual integrity” of the Turkish Airlines uniforms.

“According to the generally accepted practices, personnel who work in the services sector are preferred to be artless and well groomed with a make-up in pastel tones,” the statement said.

Egypt hotel goes alcohol-free, creates women-only floor

Egypt’s first ‘dry’ hotel has been unveiled in the popular Red Sea city of Hurghada, according to news site Al Bawaba.

Les Rois, a 183-room three-star hotel, has been voluntarily alcohol-free since Saturday when it held an official ceremony that involved pouring alcohol away and smashing bottles. A video posted on YouTube shows the event.

Earlier this year, the Egyptian government announced plans to curb alcohol licenses in parts of the country.

Spanish dominate world’s best restaurants list

The results were leaked, Noma was no longer at the top. But no one was unduly concerned.

These things are bound to happen — the 11th World’s 50 Best Restaurant Awards show went on.

What started out as a feature in the UK-based Restaurant magazine is now the most revered and sought after accolade in the business. As Richard Vines, UK and Ireland chair of the awards and chief food critic at Bloomberg, says, “It’s the restaurant industry’s equivalent of the Oscars.”

Now there’s an ABBA museum that chronicles the most important band of your lifetime — or at least the 1970s. (Sorry, but someone had to break the bad news to all those Zeppelin, Clash and Foghat fans.)

Frankfurt Skyscraper Festival: Weekend of highs and highers

Frankfurt not only has the most skyscrapers of any European city, they’re also packed together like architectural sardines. And every year the city’s Skyscraper Festival opens up these boisterous buildings to visitors.

From May 25-26, at least 18 buildings open to the general public free of charge, allowing them to explore the architecture and enjoy views across Frankfurt.

Only 80,000 tickets are allocated for high-rise access, but there will be a number of fringe programs too.
