How to say happy Chinese New Year in Chinese (and it’s not gong hei fat choy)

Chinese New Year is coming up on January 28 but have you ever wondered what you should say to your friends to wish them a happy new year?

Perhaps you’ve heard well-wishers say things like gong hei fat choy or a similar greeting and wondered what the hell it all meant?

Just for the record, gong hei fat choy, as one of the most frequently uttered greetings, does not mean happy new year at all.
